Lovely cars, yes, not great rearward visibility, but enough to keep you out of trouble from hitting something when reversing.

I came to visit family and clean up some shit I left in March because of the pandemic-avoidance-phase of covid19 . This is a small town called Soutelo de Montes. I don’t live near here... but I like a bar here.

Looking at autotrader U.K., there are 182 diesels and 25 petrols available. If think some areas the diesels have been kept rather than newer ones bought.

Much of Europe is dropping diesels.

I think the only diesels being bought now are because the driver has mostly only known diesels or dealerships are dropping the prices to get them off their forecourts.

I can get Spain in general, Barcelona and Madrid have some quite tight emissions rules. But Galicia is basically countryside, and people here swear by diesels, specially Citroens... Built here, they like them I guess.

But I have no numbers to back this notion of mine... I bet they did fall a bit because I’ve heard dealers are warning about resale value.

It’s either a Leon 1M (first generation) which is the sister of the Golf 4 and A3 8L (what i got) or a Toledo 1M which is the equivalent of the Jetta/Bora.

I posted the other day the sales number for France (don’t remember if it was for 2019 or for H1 2020 though ) , it’s still like 32% of diesel for like 38% of petrol.

That’s quite surprising considering the amount of news we keep hearing in the U.K. anyway of France wanting to ban diesels in certain areas and altogether quite soon.

Here people buy what they know in the most part.

When someone wrote off a friend’s Peugeot 306 diesel, she was given a Mini Cooper petrol as a courtesy car while the insurance companies wrangled over who was at fault (the police collision investigation team said it was the other driver, witnesses said it was the other driver, but it still went on too long, anyway). I had to go out with her several times to teacher her how to driver a petrol, for example, she was used to using the rev counter to know when to change gears.

She got it soon enough, I just wish she got used to the much better brakes of the new Mini over the old Peugeot a lot quicker, my neck hurt the first few times.

Rather badly, it cooled down during the summer but it’s back up now. Galician cities are starting consider lockdowns again, but up here in the mountains things are OK for now.

It is a very pretty place, I just wish they stopped illegal logging operations.

Only Paris has a total diesel ban planned for 2024 but other cities have at most planned to ban old diesels.

In my city, at the moment, diesels older than 2006 and petrol from 98 are not allowed to drive when there is a pollution peak ; it’s the reason i bought my A4, i thought to myself “might be the last diesel of your life and it will be easier to sell around here than a 2005 “ ; would have bought a 330D E46 or a 530D E39 if there was not this limit (and now i think that i should have done it anyway) .

I already had Covid-19. While antibodies don’t secure immunity , I’m pretty sure it’s gonna take quite a lot for me to get it again. I’m being very cautious nonetheless. Though I’m starting to feel like my family is taking less care than they should given “TAE already had it and he’s still alive OK. ” is something I hear from time to time.

It’s not just about surviving, but also spreading it to people who are more at risk. I’m glad you are still being careful even though you’ve had it. Far too many people just throw caution out the window both for their own safety and that of others if they get COVID.

Here the government keeps posturing to banning diesels here and there, banning new diesels and petrols from 2030 or 2035 but so far it’s just been bigger cities increasing congestion charges or putting restrictions on diesels in those cities.

The last three cars, no, four actually have been 1.4 and 1.5 petrols but the next will be a hybrid petrol I think, we'll see.
